Nyerere National Park
Discover Nyerere National Park
Nyerere National Park, formerly part of the renowned Selous Game Reserve, is Tanzania’s largest national park and one of Africa’s most significant wildlife conservation areas. Covering an impressive 30,893 square kilometers, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its vast wilderness, diverse ecosystems, and rich biodiversity. Named after Julius Nyerere, Tanzania’s first president, the park is a tribute to his conservation efforts and vision for the country’s natural heritage.
The park is characterized by a complex network of rivers, lakes, and swamps, with the Rufiji River being the lifeblood of the region. This river system creates a lush environment that supports an incredible variety of wildlife, including some of Africa’s most iconic species. The park’s remoteness and relatively low visitor numbers offer an authentic and unspoiled safari experience, making it a prime destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

Wildlife Experiences
Nyerere National Park offers some of the most authentic and diverse wildlife experiences in Africa. The park is home to significant populations of large mammals, including elephants, lions, leopards, and African wild dogs. The park’s elephant population, one of the largest in Tanzania, can often be seen grazing along the Rufiji River, which is the lifeblood of the park.
The Rufiji River also supports one of the largest populations of crocodiles and hippos in Africa. Boat safaris along this river offer a unique perspective on these aquatic creatures, as well as the opportunity to observe the diverse birdlife that thrives in the park’s wetland areas. The riverine forests along the Rufiji are also a great place to spot primates such as baboons and vervet monkeys.
One of the park’s most iconic species is the African wild dog, also known as the painted wolf. Nyerere National Park has one of the highest populations of these endangered predators, and sightings, while rare, are a highlight for wildlife enthusiasts. In addition to the big predators, the park is home to numerous herbivores, including buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, and a variety of antelope species.
The park’s rich avian life is a major draw for bird watchers, with over 440 recorded species. Notable species include the African fish eagle, kingfishers, herons, and the rare Pel’s fishing owl. The varied habitats, from rivers and lakes to woodlands and grasslands, support a wide range of birdlife.
Things to Do in Nyerere National Park
Game Drives
Explore the vast wilderness of Nyerere National Park on guided game drives. These drives offer the chance to see the Big Five and other wildlife up close in their natural environment. The drives are typically conducted in the early morning or late afternoon when animals are most active.
Boat Safaris
The Rufiji River provides a unique opportunity for boat safaris. These excursions offer a different perspective on the park’s wildlife, allowing you to see hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds at close range. The serene river setting also provides excellent photographic opportunities.
Walking Safaris
For those seeking a more immersive experience, walking safaris are available. Accompanied by an experienced guide, you can explore the park on foot, learning about the smaller details of the ecosystem, such as tracks, plants, and insects, and experiencing the thrill of encountering wildlife at ground level.
Birdwatching
With its diverse habitats, Nyerere National Park is a haven for bird enthusiasts. Whether you are a seasoned birder or a casual observer, the variety of species here is sure to impress. Special birding trips can be arranged to maximize the chance of spotting some of the park’s rarer species.
Fishing
The Rufiji River is also known for its excellent fishing opportunities. Visitors can try their hand at catching tigerfish and catfish, among others, while enjoying the tranquil surroundings.

The best time to visit Nyerere National Park depends on what visitors hope to experience:
Dry Season (June to October): This is the best time for game viewing, as the dry conditions cause animals to congregate around the Rufiji River and other water sources. The vegetation is thinner, making it easier to spot wildlife, and the mild temperatures are ideal for safari activities. Boat safaris are particularly rewarding during this period, as animals frequent the riverbanks in search of water.
Wet Season (November to May): The wet season transforms the park into a lush, green landscape, with the rivers and wetlands teeming with life. While wildlife may be more dispersed and harder to spot, the wet season is excellent for birdwatching, as migratory birds arrive in large numbers. The calving season for many herbivores occurs during this period, offering a chance to see newborn animals. However, some areas of the park may become inaccessible due to flooding.
